Biology Major Career Paths: Beyond Medical School

Not going to med school? Here's what you can actually do with a biology degree — including biotech, environmental science, and six-figure paths.

The Pre-Med Backup Plan (That Might Be Better)

Half of biology majors start as pre-med. About half of those don't end up going to medical school — whether by choice or because the path didn't work out. If you're a bio major without an MD in your future, you have more options than you think.

Research & Biotech ($45K-$120K)

  • Research Associate ($45K-$65K): Lab work at universities, biotech companies, or pharma. Entry-level with a BS.
  • Biotech Scientist ($70K-$120K): With a master's or PhD, you can lead research projects at companies like Genentech, Moderna, or Amgen.
  • Clinical Research Coordinator ($50K-$70K): Manage clinical trials. Gateway to the pharmaceutical industry.

Healthcare (Non-Physician)

  • Physician Assistant ($115K-$130K): 2-3 year master's program. High pay, high demand, no residency.
  • Physical Therapist ($80K-$95K): DPT program (3 years post-bachelor's). Rewarding patient care.
  • Genetic Counselor ($80K-$100K): Master's required. Growing rapidly with advances in genomics.
  • Public Health ($50K-$90K): MPH degree opens doors to epidemiology, health policy, and global health.

Non-Traditional Pivots

  • Science Writing/Communication ($45K-$80K): Translate science for the public. Journalism, content marketing, or publishing.
  • Environmental Consulting ($50K-$90K): Help companies comply with environmental regulations.
  • Patent Agent/Attorney ($80K-$180K): Biology + law = biotech patent law. Extremely lucrative niche.
  • Sales (Medical/Pharma) ($60K-$130K+): Sell medical devices or pharmaceuticals. Your bio knowledge gives you credibility.

The Graduate School Question

For biology, a bachelor's degree alone has limited earning power. The highest-ROI move is either: (1) a professional degree (PA, PT, MPH) with clear career outcomes, or (2) industry experience at a biotech company, which often pays for a master's degree. Avoid a PhD unless you truly want to be a researcher — the opportunity cost is significant.
