What to Do the Week After You Commit to a College
You committed. Now what? Here's your post-deposit checklist for the first week — housing, orientation, health forms, and everything else.
You Deposited — Now the Real Work Starts
Committing to a college feels like the end of a journey, but it's actually the beginning of a sprint. The week after your deposit, there are critical tasks that determine your housing assignment, orientation slot, and even your first-semester schedule.
Day 1-2: Set Up Your Student Email
Your school email is where everything official goes from now on. Set it up immediately and check it daily. Miss an email, miss a deadline. Add it to your phone.
Day 2-3: Apply for Housing
Housing applications often open the day deposits are confirmed. Early applicants get better options. Fill out the housing questionnaire honestly — your roommate match depends on it.
Day 3-4: Register for Orientation
Orientation slots fill up fast, and earlier dates often get better course selection. Register for the earliest available date unless you have a genuine conflict.
Day 4-5: Submit Health Forms
Most schools require immunization records, a health history form, and sometimes a physical exam. Start gathering these now — your doctor's office may need weeks to process records.
Day 5-7: Withdraw From Other Schools
Send polite withdrawal emails/portal submissions to every other school that accepted you. Free up spots for waitlisted students. This is good karma and good etiquette.
Don't Forget
- Accept your financial aid package formally (separate from the enrollment deposit)
- Set up your tuition payment plan if offered
- Take any required placement tests (math, language)
- Join your class's social media groups (but take them with a grain of salt)
