Should You Visit a College Before Committing? What Remote Students Miss

Can't visit campus before May 1? Here's what you miss by not visiting, how to evaluate remotely, and whether it actually matters.

The Ideal vs. Reality

In a perfect world, you'd visit every school that accepted you before deciding. In reality, flights are expensive, parents can't always take time off, and some schools are across the country. So: how important is visiting, really?

What You Get From a Visit That You Can't Get Online

  • Campus energy: Is it bustling or dead? Collaborative or competitive? You can't feel this through a screen.
  • Scale: Is the campus walkable or do you need a bus? Are buildings modern or dated? Photos are misleading.
  • The surrounding town: Street-view isn't the same as walking the neighborhood. Some campuses feel isolated; others feel urban. This matters for 4 years.
  • Gut feeling: Some students walk onto a campus and just know. This instinct is real and worth trusting.

How to Evaluate Without Visiting

  • Virtual tours: Every school has one. Watch the full version, not the highlight reel.
  • YouTube student vlogs: Search "[School name] day in my life." These show reality, not marketing.
  • Talk to current students: DM students on Instagram or LinkedIn. Ask: "What do you wish you knew before enrolling?"
  • Google Maps street view: Walk the campus and surrounding blocks virtually.
  • Niche.com reviews: Student-written reviews with ratings on academics, social life, campus food, etc.

The Honest Answer

If your top two schools are close in cost and academics, and you can visit one but not the other, the visit will likely break the tie. If you can't visit either, make the best decision you can with data and don't look back. Thousands of students commit without visiting every year and do great.
