Record Label Careers

  • Marketing/Promotion ($40K-$100K): Create and execute marketing campaigns for artists and releases. Digital marketing skills are essential.
  • Label Operations ($45K-$90K): Distribution, supply chain, project management for releases. The operational backbone of any label.

Music Publishing ($45K-$120K)

Publishers manage songwriters' catalogs and collect royalties from every use of their music — streams, radio, TV, film, ads. Sync licensing (placing songs in TV/film/ads) is one of the fastest-growing revenue streams. Publishers earn $45K-$70K at entry level; senior VPs at companies like Sony/ATV or Warner Chappell earn $120K-$200K+.

Artist Management ($30K-$200K+)

Managers guide every aspect of an artist's career — deals, branding, touring, and business strategy. Income is typically 15-20% of the artist's earnings, which means it ranges from poverty wages to millions depending on client success. The best managers are equal parts strategist, therapist, and dealmaker.

Live Events and Touring ($35K-$120K)

Booking agents, tour managers, promoters, and venue operators power the live music economy. Live Nation, AEG, and CAA are the largest employers. Touring roles pay $35K-$70K at junior levels; senior booking agents and festival directors earn $100K-$200K+.

Music Tech ($60K-$150K)

Companies like Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and Bandcamp hire product managers, data scientists, and engineers who understand music. Music tech combines tech salaries with music industry knowledge. Data analysts at Spotify or marketing managers at Apple Music earn $80K-$130K.

Breaking In

  • Intern early: Labels, publishers, and management companies rely heavily on interns. Start during college.
  • Build relationships: Music is a relationship business. Attend shows, conferences (SXSW, MIDEM, Billboard events), and build your network.
