May 1 Decision Deadline: How to Choose Your College in 5 Weeks
The May 1 commitment deadline is coming fast. Here's a week-by-week guide to making the right college decision without panicking.
You Have 5 Weeks. Here's Your Plan.
Between Ivy Day (March 27) and the May 1 commitment deadline, you need to go from "I have options" to "I'm committing." That sounds stressful, but with a structured approach, you can make a confident decision.
Week 1 (March 27 – April 2): Gather Your Offers
Create a spreadsheet with every school that admitted you. List: net price after aid, intended major, graduation rate, median earnings for that major, and your gut-feeling rating (1–10). Don't make any decisions yet — just organize.
Week 2 (April 3 – 9): Visit or Revisit
Most schools hold Admitted Students Days in April. Attend at least your top 2–3. If you can't visit, attend virtual events and connect with current students on social media. Pay attention to how you feel on campus, not just how the brochure looks.
Week 3 (April 10 – 16): Do the Financial Deep Dive
Compare net costs side by side. Factor in 4-year totals, not just freshman year. Call financial aid offices to clarify anything confusing. If one school is significantly cheaper with similar outcomes, that matters.
Week 4 (April 17 – 23): Talk to Real People
Reach out to alumni or current students in your intended major. Ask them: "Would you choose this school again? Why or why not?" Their honest answers are worth more than any campus tour.
Week 5 (April 24 – May 1): Decide and Commit
By now, you should have a clear top choice. Submit your deposit, withdraw from other schools (it's polite and frees spots for waitlisted students), and start getting excited. You've made an informed decision.
