How to Find Your College Roommate Before Move-In Day
Finding your freshman roommate online? Here's how to use Instagram, Roomsurf, and Facebook groups to find a compatible match — and red flags to avoid.
The Roommate Search Has Gone Digital
Most incoming freshmen find their roommate on Instagram or dedicated platforms before ever setting foot on campus. Here's how to navigate the process without the awkwardness.
Where to Look
- Instagram: Search your class hashtag (e.g., #[School]2030). Post a bio slide with your major, hometown, interests, and living habits.
- Roomsurf / RoomSync: Many schools partner with these platforms for roommate matching. Answer questionnaires about sleep schedule, cleanliness, and social habits.
- Facebook Groups: Yes, they still exist for this. Your class group is often the most active roommate search space.
- The Random Option: Going random is underrated. Schools use housing questionnaires to match compatible habits. Many lifelong friendships start with random roommates.
What Actually Matters in a Roommate
Forget shared hobbies. The three things that matter most for roommate compatibility:
- Sleep schedule: A night owl and an early bird will struggle. This is the #1 roommate conflict.
- Cleanliness standards: You don't have to be identical, but you need to be in the same ballpark.
- Guest/visitor expectations: How often are significant others or friends sleeping over? Agree on this early.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Someone who wants to be best friends before you've met in person (healthy boundaries matter)
- Wildly different social habits (party every night vs. quiet study)
- Refusing to discuss living preferences ("it'll all work out" is not a plan)
