College Decisions Are Out — Now What?
Just got your college decision? Here is a calm, practical guide to what to do next whether you got in, got waitlisted, or got rejected.
College Decisions Are Out — Now What?
If you are reading this, there is a good chance you just opened an email or portal update that changed your life — or at least your next four years. March 14th is one of the biggest decision release days of the year, and whether you are celebrating, crying, or somewhere in between, you are not alone.
Take a breath. Seriously. Whatever that email said, your next steps matter more than the decision itself. Here is what to do right now.
If You Got Accepted
Congratulations — you earned this. But do not commit on impulse. You likely have until May 1st (National Decision Day) to make your choice, and rushing can cost you thousands.
Your immediate to-do list:
- Screenshot everything. Save your acceptance letter, financial aid offer, and any scholarship details.
- Do NOT pay a deposit yet. Wait until you have heard back from every school. Deposits are usually non-refundable.
- Compare your financial aid packages carefully. The sticker price is not the real price. Look at net cost after grants and scholarships.
- Talk to someone who actually goes there. Campus tours show you the highlights. Students who live there tell you the truth — the dorm quality, the dining hall food, whether professors actually care. Ask Kinsley connects you with real students and alumni at your schools so you can get the unfiltered story.
- Check housing deadlines. Some schools fill dorms on a first-come basis.
If You Got Waitlisted
Being waitlisted is not a rejection — it is a maybe. And maybes can turn into yeses if you play it right.
- Accept your spot on the waitlist immediately. Schools track demonstrated interest.
- Send a Letter of Continued Interest. Keep it to one page. Tell them why they are your top choice and share updates since you applied.
- Have a backup plan. Commit to a school you did get into by May 1st. You can always switch later.
If You Got Rejected
This stings. There is no way around it. But a rejection from one school does not define your future — not even close.
- Admissions is not a measure of your worth. Schools reject incredible students every year because of factors completely outside your control.
- Your college does not determine your success. Research shows that student motivation matters far more than the name on the diploma.
- You have options. Transfer admissions, gap years, and schools you had not considered might turn out to be perfect fits.
What Not to Do Today
- Do not compare yourself to classmates. Their results have nothing to do with yours.
- Do not make a permanent decision based on today's emotions. You have weeks.
- Do not ghost your safety schools. A school that accepted you believed in you.
- Do not go into massive debt for a name. A debt-free degree can be worth more than a prestigious diploma with six figures of loans.
The Smartest Thing You Can Do Right Now
Before you commit anywhere, talk to people who have actually been there. Not admissions counselors with scripts — real students and alumni who can tell you what daily life is actually like.
That is exactly what Ask Kinsley was built for. Browse schools, compare outcomes, and book a call with someone who lived the experience you are considering. Whatever happened today, this is one chapter, not the whole story.
